A couple of additions to the figures I posted yesterday. The percentages
were of the total number of jobs. These show a slightly different breakdown.

***
Central city residents working where they live: 49.8%
Suburbanites working where they live: 18.4%

Central city residents working elsewhere: 50.2%
Suburbanites working elsewhere: 80.7%
**

To add the travel side of the work stats I posted. I'll draw some
conclusions in another post. These are all census numbers.

I'll lump those who said that they took a streetcar, subway, elevated,
railroad, ferryboat, or taxi in with the bus riders. Interestingly,
the taxi numbers ran a fairly consistent 1.3% to 1.7% of the total for
public transportation, regardless of which city or suburbs. There's
another category, "other means", that I'm leaving out because you can't
tell whether it's rollerblading, snowmobiling, etc.; it comes to a little
under 1/2% of all work trips.

I am also assigning all bike, walking, and other means trips to be to
jobs in the same city. I know that there are some who would cross
boundaries, but when bike trips are less than 2% of the total, even a 10%
split doesn't have a huge impact.

Suburbs

Used a car, truck, or van: 79.7%
  Drove alone: 71.8%
  Carpooled: 7.9%
Public transportation: 2.6%

(likely non-motorized): 4.9%

Since 53% of Minneapolis residents worked in the city and 11.9% used
non-motorized travel, that means 41.1% used motorized travel to work in
the city and the other 47% used motorized travel to work elsewhere.
Total of 88.1% using motorized travel.

Since 45.3% of Saint Paul residents worked in the city and 9.6% used
non-motorized travel, that means that 35.7% used motorized travel to work
in the city and the other 54.7% used motorized travel to work elsewhere.
Total of 90.4% using motorized travel.

Since 19.4% of suburbanites worked in the city where they live and 4.9%
used non-motorized travel, that means that 14.5% used motorized travel
to work in the city where they live and the other 80.6% used motorized
travel to work elsewhere. Total of 95.1% using motorized travel.
