Well, I think it is enough for the media to cite conflicting estimates. But I also wonder why estimates even matter. The Minneapolis demonstration was showing solidarity with the ordinary people all over the world who simultaneously showed that imperialism and unprovoked aggression is as wrong now as it was in 1991 and 1939. The attempt to misuse a peacekeeping organization like the U.N. obviously resonates in a very annoying way with a lot of Minneapolis residents, and the more sturdy and determined got out in the street to give a visual sign of that.
The fact of urban residents demonstrating against conservative politics should surprise nobody. We city-dwellers have never been fond of those who herd the poor into wars to enlarge the wealth of the rich. That was the background of "Gangs of New York", and things haven't really changed. Lincoln's war was unpopular. And so is Bush's attempt to turn peace into war.
