My God, I didnt think that anyone still believed in
this tired old stereotype.

>From a Star Tribune article about the hit that human
services is going to take from Pawlentys budget cuts,
a hit that will significantly affect Minneapolis:

<snip>
Among the welfare changes would be a limit on the
amount a woman could receive, even if she gives birth
again. The idea is to discourage further pregnancies.
Currently, a woman who has a second baby would have
her welfare check increase from $437 to $532 a month.

I seriously doubt this move is going to make
low-income adults say, Wait a minute, dear, wed
better not, I wont get a bigger check. However, life
skills or family planning for low-income families are
written off as pork. So whats the next step? Forced
sterilization? Or just punish the kids for the bad
judgement/mistakes of the parents?

MPR described a partnership called Walk a Mile in
Their Shoes about politicians who partnered up with
low-income families to experience how they lived.
{Unfortunately, I couldnt find a link on MPR, but it
was during their recent series Falling Behind.} Tim
Pawlenty is in serious need of walking a mile in
somebodys thrift-store shoes. He seems to equate
low-income people with baby-making, check-collecting,
bacon-rind-chawing deadbeats.
