Well, we've been waiting to see what Pawlenty would cut and he's made it
pretty clear that he is targeting city residents. We didn't vote for
him, after all -- what does he owe us? He even changed the name of Local
Government Aid to City Aid, just to make it clear that we city folks are
getting money we didn't earn. City Aid -- it has the ring of a welfare
program now. And to cut back funds for the metro area's one hope for a
modern mass transportation system is just infuriating. It seems as
though this crew is intent on making Light Rail fail.
The Strib hit it on the head in their editorial this morning. If you
live in a suburb and don't have kids in college, you get to skate on
these cuts. If you're a city resident, get ready to hurt. And if you're
a city resident who is sick, elderly, or poor and in need of health
treatment, heaven help you.
These cuts feel mean and pointed squarely at city residents. This city
helps drive this state's economy. Face it, guys, without Minneapolis --
its arts, culture, food, people (not to mention tax dollars), this state
is a colder, poorer place. If those folks in the suburbs think they can
live without us, they had better hope they don't get their wish.
