I do appreciate great food--overly much. But I long for a perfect coffee shop. Though it was a function of it's time and place, nothing I otherwise know in Minneapolis or St. Paul has quite the panache that Cathy's Grade A at 25th and Chicago had. It was the penultimate American grease breakfast place. It's era has passed, but the need for the perfect greasy spoon is big in South Minneapolis.
A week ago or slightly better, a dirty so-an'-so took me to a semi-foofy (Jay Clark's term) coffee shop on Franklin Ave., directly across the street from the Franklin Library at 14th Av. They're coffee is to die for. They make coffee that smells and tastes the same! I didn't know it was possible.
It's called Black Mesa, owned by Tony and Sue (senior moment here on their last name). The tables are small and round, the chairs are wooden kitchen chairs (my favs), the place is beautiful, cleaner than a nun's prayer book, delightful to the eye, delightful to the eye, nose, and mouth.
I can see that I'll be traipsing down to Franklin Av. on a regular basis, raiding Franklin Library for murder mysteries, and drinking coffee.
The guy who introduced me to this place knows who he is and we'll be talking again about this subject--over coffee at the Black Mesa.
