ONE more restaurant to add: Crescent Moon Bakery, 2339 Central Ave NE. There are two places in Minneapolis where you can get foods of Afghanistan. Da Afghan Express in Dinkytown (not sure if its still open) and the Crescent Moon Bakery. I've actually eaten at the Crescent Moon and can vouch for the authenticity of the menu. I've only looked at the menu at Da Afghan Express, and it seemed less so. So, based on that, I have to recommend Crescent Moon. You can find more info on it here: http://twincities.citysearch.com/profile/11406926/
David Piehl commented:"In my opinion, Peter has it partially right; I believe there is merit to the idea that the 40 year decline of areas of south Minneapolis and Lake Street near the freeway had a lot to do with the freeway being built, but I don't believe it was lack of direct access at Lake St. that caused the damage - West Broadway has direct access, and with all due respect to the folks living in that area, it hasn't stimulated much development or commercial activity on Broadway" Good point, David. No, if there was decline on Lake, it mostly was a result of the phenomenon of cheap gas and the flight to the suburbs. Anyone who has been here since the 1960s can remember all the significant businesses which relocated when their customer base moved south and west. The businesses now operate with the same name but a suburban location. And the lack of access to Lake was because there was no REASON for 35-W users to exit at Lake. They were either passing THROUGH town or going DOWNTOWN. Which should remind some that the design of the Eisenhower Interstate System was NEVER to cut through town. The highways, designed for security needs, were to go AROUND so that they would never be clogged by commuter traffic. Craig Miller, from Rogers, complains about the use of "flight" to describe his living far from the cities while living OFF the cities. So maybe Craig can tell us why he NEEDS interstate highways to get INTO Minneapolis. Isnt Rogers self-sufficient? Isn't that what attracted you to it, Craig? Vicky Heller (she of the somnolent mouth, she says) tells us we are still "rich". From my lookup of North Oaks financial affairs, the per-capita spending in Minneapolis is not "rich". Moreover, she is doing accounting Anderson-style. Minneapolis is NOT a family with a $100,000 income. It is closer to a family $20,000 income. Take your 2.2 percent away from that family, and it hurts. -------------- Jim Mork--Cooper "Save yourself from this corrupt generation....All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need".
