| As I see it, excluding bikes from Lake Street is yet another attempt by the county planners to "keep the ghetto out", and it's a form of racism and classism. Think about it - Lake Street won't accomodate bikes, and then there is the big mess of highway-style lanes for several blocks in either direction of I35-W that will come complements of Peter McLaughlin's brainchild (boondoggle) "Access Project". None of this promotes non-automobile traffic; they actually inhibit anything without a muffler. My guess is they are afraid that east-west access will become too easy, crossing the moat that is the freeway, and "exposing" the sheltered, wealthy neighborhoods to the west to all that the city has to offer. By the way, I've been casually following the Access Project for a long time, but I've never figured out why extra ramps for cars constitutes access. Would not true access accomodate transportation modes that are not currently accomodated? Also, I checked out www.stride-mn.org, and can report that the site has been updated with a great deal of additional information. I learned more than I wanted to know about the dirty politics surrounding this boondoggle. Peter McLaughlin ought to think hard about proceeding with this project or not.
