A participant who always seems to be on the side of spending money says:"When no compensation of any sort is offered, the only people who can attend are the feckless and the very powerful/wealthy."

Wait a minute. I went to the citizen's fair and learned about all the volunteer opportunities. A great number of them were unpaid. Do we SERIOUSLY mean to say anyone who seized an opportunity to improve the city without pay becomes "feckless"?

WM: As the participant making that statement and as a person who can and has been described as feckless, indeed, as an Irish American daughter of a truly, wonderfully feckless father, I stand by my statement which, if you were to check it, said that the truly feckless can afford to volunteer for very serious and demanding boards, as can the wealthy.

It seems an apology is due here to people who work in ANY kind of volunter position without pay. It is quite insulting to think their dedication to the city is characterized as "feckless".

Sir, I make no apology for being feckless. I have mastered some of the loveliest benefits of those periods in my life when I felt I could afford total fecklessness. Yeah, verily, I have gone to the lengths of fecklessness as to hitchhike from MN to Guatemala and live for months out of a backpack in the forests of Mexico. I can say, without fear of contradiction, that I have proven my fecklessness. I can also say that I have proven the worth of my brand of fecklessness to my neighborhood. I cite working with a group to make Green Central Weed & Seed get a grip on its work, I can cite working with five neighborhoods to produce the enhanced Hosmer Community Library, I can cite my writing of the original plan to begin the monstrous task of minimizing lead hazards in Phillips. If you think that anyone can become fecklessness as a result of serving on a public board, you are much mistaken. It takes decades to achieve the sort of fecklessness of which I speak. If you are hoping to learn how to become feckless on a public board, you are doomed to disappointment.
