I'm very proud to announce that Southwest Journal reporter Scott Russell has
won a 2002 Frank Premack Award.

The award recognizes top public-affairs reporting in Minnesota, and is given
out by the U's School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

According to the Premack Awards press release:

"Scott Russell and the Southwest Journal are the winners of the Weekly
Newspaper award for the story "How Pensions Blew A Hole In the City Budget"
that was published on Sept. 9, 2002.

"Premack judges in this category said, 'This story took a complex financial
issue and explained it in an understandable way. The article provided detail
and history about a subject that is going to have a huge impact on the city
council's decision-making process. The reporter demonstrated significant
enterprise in his research on an obscure but important aspect of the city's
budget.'"

Anyone who knows Scott knows he is a top-notch reporter, so the award is
well-deserved. We're all proud to be associated with him, and proud that
weekly newspaper reporting gets such recognition.

Special mention should go to our former Creative Director Karen Harris, who
made an already sharp story even more comprehensible.
