On Monday March 17th(Happy St. Patrick's Day) at 1:00 p.m. at the airport,
the Metropolitan Airports Commission will be considering the 2003 Capital
Improvement Program which includes, at this time, the funding to complete
the noise insulation program for homes in the 1996 approved 65 dB DNL
contours. The funding as currently proposed by the MAC staff will allow for
the completion of over 450 south Minneapolis homes within the 65 dB DNL
contours. It is anticipated that Northwest Airlines will continue to bring
considerable pressure to bear upon the Commissioners to postpone and/or
cancel the project based upon the severe and real financial issues facing
the airport and industry. They will argue that when the new contours are
drawn this year based upon 2007 projections, these Minneapolis homes which
are already on the edges of the contours will not qualify for the full
package of noise mitigation. It is crucial to have a turnout of government
officials and residents to remind the MAC of the promises made in the past.
In addition, meetings will be held during the next few months concerning the
assumptions and projections to be made relating to the new 2007 noise
contours. Feel free to visit the MAC website for more information on these
upcoming meetings: http://www.mspairport.com/msp/ and
http://www.macnoise.com/. These are crucial times for south Minneapolis and
all citizens concerned with noise issues.
