(JC) As a fellow STRIDE "traveler", I'd like to weigh in on this discussion. You exactly right. STRIDE is run entirely by volunteers. We have no multi-million dollar federal contracts. Most of us walk, bike and bus for transportation - by choice. That is why the Excess Project is so offensive. It is based entirely on gloomy "traffic growth projections". Read between the lines and this means more cars, more smog and more pedestrian fatalities. We favor instead the concept of "traffic reduction". We recognize that quality sidewalks are the hallmark of democracy. Auto dependence widens the gap between rich and poor and is catastrophic for our urban environment. We support a plan that depaves roads and returns them to pedestrians and bicycles. We support a dedicated busway in the 35W trench within the existing right-of-way, converting auto lanes into bus lanes. We support a new vision for urban transport based on traffic reduction, and massive improvements to pedestrian, transit and bicycle infrastructure.
