Samuels Turns to Community for Help in Choosing New Council Aide "The Council Aide is not a political reward - it is a community resource." -Don Samuels Although the council aide position is a political appointment often reserved for campaign workers or political insiders, newly elected Third Ward Council Member Don Samuels is following a different approach. "This staff position is a resource for the residents and business of the Third Ward." Samuels said. "I came from the community, the community elected me, and now I am turning to the community for the wisdom on what we need and want as we complete the new office staffing" Samuels asked a group of community leaders to help him collect input, review candidates and make recommendations by the first week of May. The Community Advisory Committee is chaired by Northeast resident Kim Carlson, a former council aide for Council Member Barbara Carlson. The committee includes representation from neighborhoods and businesses in the Third Ward. The committee also includes a representative from Marcy Holmes neighborhood, which has been redistricted into the new Third Ward. "This will be an exciting opportunity for the community to define the expectations and desired qualities in a new Aide. My goal is to meaningfully engage the community in the process of finding the best possible Aide to support the goals of the residents, neighborhoods, and businesses of the Third Ward." said Mr. Samuels in a letter inviting input and help recruiting candidates sent to neighborhood and community organizations in the Third Ward. Becky Hunter, a North Minneapolis resident, has served as the Council Aide for the past two years. She was instrumental in providing the community support following the resignation of Councilmember Joe Biernat. Don Samuels said Ms. Hunter has been "incredibly supportive in bringing me up to speed on the Council issues facing the residents of the Third Ward." He added that "Her commitment to the residents and business of the Third Ward is exemplary. We are all sad she has chosen to leave and wish her the best as she returns to graduate school." ---------------------------------------------------------------- Becky Hunter 3rd Ward Council Aide Victory resident Submitted on behalf of Council Member Samuels TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1.
