Just got home from a great evening at Target Center where I watched the Patriots of Patrick Henry High School capture their FOURTH consecutive 3A Boys' State Basketball Championship with a 69-55 victory over Sauk Rapids-Rice. The Pats were led by senior point guard Lawrence McKenzie, who's headed down to Oklahoma for college.
Then I got to watch my own North High Polars win their first 4A Boys' State Basketball Championship since 1997 in an absolutely heart-stopping 82-73 double-overtime victory over Osseo. The Polars were led by seniors Kammron Taylor, who's going to Wisconsin next year and seven-footer James Davis, who's still uncommitted. Earlier in the day, the De La Salle Islanders finished as the State 2A Runner-up after falling 51-33 to Litchfield. It was great to see a pretty full house for the games, a big improvement over my high school days when the state tourney was held at the old Civic Center. It was also good to see Minneapolis CMs Ostrow and Samuels out supporting the home teams. Congratulations to the hometown cagers! You all did us real proud!
