No Don..you are right. MADD is wrong on this one; and maybe some others.

First the issue, spreading out the departure of many partaking in downtown
entertainment will indeed lessen the police burden. Conventioneers from
around the country will be more likely to come to Minneapolis. The problem
with the MADD argument is that it assumes we're all there under some voodoo
impulse to drink as much as we can until 2:00 am versus stopping at 12:00 or
1:00 and having some water or diet cokes. In fact, I've heard some
businesses want to stay open 'til say 3:00 just for the coffee and food and
they can't...is this true?

As it stands now, bar owners walk around at 12:30, tell everyone to slam
their drinks and get the heck out. Then people are met with no open
businesses to get a coffee and hang out. So they get in their cars and are
forced onto the freeway by barricades. And of course, a nice by-product is
the revenue generation via the DWI process.

The city wants the jobs, the revenue, the visitors etc etc. But, more often
than not, some puritanical wave hits their minds and it doesn't happen. It
is compounded when we all feel like jerks personally debating some "mad
mother" who obviously has suffered a great loss. This does not mean she is
right on every issue simply because she colors the issue with the blood of
her child.

We should have bars stay open until 2:00 am
