I know that big box stores survive by economies of scale. But to build another one in a location that is already served diminishes those economies of scale. Nor am I suggesting that it should be OUTSIDE the city. But I am questioning that city it should be INSIDE is Minneapolis. It seems to me that Highland Park and the West 7th area are the places that lack and perhaps could use a big box food retail store. Moreover, my reading of the Highland community paper in the past indicates that Highland residents are resistant to most development proposals. But I drove down West 7th and learned that between St Paul Ave and St Clair Ave, there is NO food retail. Both stores now on W 7th are Super Value. Super Value owns Cub. It seems to me that Highland and West 7th could be very well served by Super Value changing the Sibley Plaza store to a Cub, buying out the present store's neighbors in the process. Access is easy via St Paul Ave, even now with Ford Bridge construction. The parking is already in place.

But if not that site, then down the hill is a vast industrial district where a warehouse might already exist to be converted.

I'm somewhat amazed that neither Fleming nor Super Value jumped into that opening already. I wonder if they think too narrowly. Longfellow has a pretty good deal already. Let business seek locations that haven't been so well served.
