SAM: I have to disagree. I don't know when the upswing will happen, but it will happen. A similar thing is happening in Detroit. People are moving back to Detroit proper because there are no affordable suburbs left. Birmingham, Royal Oak, Berkley, Ferndale--all were once-downscale suburbs that became hip, and consequently, pricey. The further south you went, the closer to Detroit you go. After Ferndale, there's no place to go but Detroit. Similarly, in the Twin Cities people are priced out of Uptown, Linden Hills, and now Nordeast (sorry, Northeast). Eventually, there will be nowhere to go but north Minneapolis. Of course, "someday" is of little comfort to the current and longtime northside residents who need solutions now. Dyna: > Yep... we want our water tower in Farview Park back for a start, then Sweigart's Meats and the Union Depot. > SAM: Has there ever been a Mpls. mayor from the northside? Even if mayors are 100% objective, they can't help but be most in tune with their neighborhood of origin and that neighborhood's needs. I see that Mark Stenglein Is thinking of running. John Derus ran, albeit unsuccessfully. What about Olin? Being mayor of an entire city seems like a better use of his clout than being CM of one ward. Thoughts, Dyna or anyone else?
