Folks: My apologies for having jumped the gun. This is only a proposal now and not a done deal.
According to Skyway News the proposal will go to the City Council's Public Safety and Regulatory Services Committee on May 21st. The article does an excellent job of addressing the concerns of the proposal's opponents, one of them being that cameras downtown will push more crime into neighborhoods outside of downtown. Still, I'm not letting the DFL off the hook, since one of the proponents of this proposal is Doug Kress, an aide to City Councilmember Lisa Goodman (of the DFL) and a former candidate for city council in the Tenth Ward (he ran under the DFL banner). Kress says: "We're never going to have enough money for our police to be everywhere all the time. [A camera system] will be a great opportunity for us to have additional eyes witnessing things on the streets that are happening, including a lot of the nuisance crimes that we hear about from our Downtown patrons and Downtown visitors." Personally, I think this is another slap in the face from Target to North Minneapolis Thank you, List Manager, for the invaluable link, and my apologies for going on the list more than the alloted two times. ---------Peter Schmitz CARAG TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1.
