SAM: Is Target losing money, or not making as much money as it would like? What irks me is, with Targets obsession for branding, I wouldnt be surprised if theyre doing consumer profiling. This is a practice that many retailers use. They create a fictitious customer-give her a name, occupation, an entire life historyand market exclusively to her. An example, Victoria, age 45 to 55, enjoys tennis, yoga, her kids are in college, she enjoys healthy foods but indulges in coffee shops, and vacations in Europe once a year. I suspect the name LaKeisha or Chaou or Vanessa or Dyna for that matter is low on Targets list of desired customers. What the north side needs is a retailer who recognizes the value of the urban retail audience. People of color buy toilet paper and toothpaste and motor oil like everyone else. But they also buy beauty products and food items that you wont find in your average suburban Target. Mingo-Jones is a successful ad agency that markets specifically to African Americans. Numerous direct mail agencies target Latino audiences. Movie producers finally realized that blacks attend movies with the success of Waiting to Exhale. Minorities are going to be the majority. When is a retailer going to realize that and capitalize on it? Susan Maricle formerly of Folwell Bruno MN __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
