Residents from any county can purchase low cost compost bins made from recycled plastic for $30 at the Dakota County Eco Yard- http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/environ/compost_bins_info.htm , Thursdays through Saturdays over the summer.
This Friday June 6th is the deadline for Hennepin County residents to order compost bins for $25 and compost buckets for $5 on-line at www.co.hennepin.mn.us/environmental
Approximately 4,000 compost bins will be distributed throughout Hennepin County on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the bin is only $25, with the retail price more than $70! Kitchen scrap buckets also will be available for only $5, with the retail price more than $20. These events will be the only time this year for residents to get a bin and bucket at these amazing low prices!
Backyard composting is an easy way for residents to turn much of the waste from their yards and kitchens into a rich material that can be used to improve the soil. Using finished compost on lawns and gardens will provide an organic fertilizer, suppress weeds, and hold moisture in the soil.
The compost bin features a 13-cubic-foot capacity, a sturdy, easy-to-open lid, two harvesting doors, and is made with recycled plastic. The kitchen scrap bucket holds 9.7 quarts and has a charcoal filter to control odors.
The limit is one compost bin and kitchen bucket per Hennepin County household. Residents must reserve a bin and bucket by June 6, and then pick up and pay for at one of the following events:
Minneapolis - Anne Sullivan Communication Center parking lot, 3100 East 28th St, Saturday, June 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Brooklyn Park - Brooklyn Park Operations and Maintenance Facility parking lot, 8300 Noble Ave N, Wednesday, June 25, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
In addition, Hennepin County Environmental Services is partnering with the University of Minnesota Extension Service of Hennepin County to offer free "Composting 101" seminars for residents.
This year Minneapolis residents have ordered more than 1,200 compost bins so far. Let’s reach 2,000!
County residents are encouraged to order online at www.co.hennepin.mn.us/environmental or call Environmental Services at 612-348-9266 for more information on the distribution events or seminars.
