WM: Getting out of being mentally ill? Just when do you expect the brain to heal? When will the chemical composition of the brain adjust? When will insurance cover mental illness in a way that doesn't beggar the patient? For example, if you change jobs while on anti-depressants, you have to go one year without your meds in order for the insurance at your new job to pick you up. Nice, huh? Those who get treatment for mental illness risk their insurance coverage. This is currently happening to one of my dearest friends who is going through agonies without meds just to be insurable. I'd like to be omnipotent for a little bit to drub those insurance suckers into the ground.

What are the names of the groups who want to keep Peace House operating?
Was there a community meeting that decided on keeping Peace House open?

WM: One should be careful about making decisions for other neighborhoods. People around Peace House know its value. I happen to know its value from having met Sister Rose Tilleman some years back. Jim Graham has come on this list to defend Peace House and I think he only lives two or three blocks from there. The pain that those who visit Peace House regularly are suffering is indescribable in its magnitude. For some, that they can even stand up and walk with such weight on their shoulders is a miracle.
It occurs to me that you're making judgments from drive-by sitings. You might consider parking the car and paying a visit to Peace House. Doug Grow did a piece on them a few years ago, it was very sweet. You could look it up or call Grow and have him e-mail a copy to you or the date so you could check it from the library.
All four corners of Portland and Franklin are being developed in a staged plan. Hope House is developing the one on the Southeast corner at the moment. The other three corners will develop in good time. From what Graham has said, I gather that Hope House will still be there after the redevelopment. From my perspective, it doesn't do to "clean up" the neighborhood by squashing that little hope the most vulnerable have.
