I have to admit that I'm a newcomer to Minneapolis so I may not have all of the background necessary to understand how the races are distributed among the high schools, but when I was running for school board it did seem to me that there were wide racial differences between schools. So, just to get a feel for how groups are distributed I've created graphs of the racial distributions of the high schools and placed them on a map of Minneapolis. There seems to be a clear tread of the more Northern schools having greater percentages of Blacks and Asians, and the Southwest having more Whites and Hispanics, but there's something I don't understand and perhaps someone can explain it to me. Why would two schools that are less than two miles apart, Roosevelt and South, have radically different percentages of Blacks and Whites? Especially when Roosevelt is further South surrounded by what seem to be Whiter neighborhoods and South High is further North and closer to Central neighborhoods with more African Americans? The map and graphs can be accessed at the following addresses: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~athe0007/school_map.gif http://www.tc.umn.edu/~athe0007/Graphs.gif The color coding for the bars of the graphs are the stereotypic and historic color designations for racial groups.
