In the article today about London's bartime becoming 24 hours brought to mind a story from a party I was at last night. When we turned to the topic of the week - bar time in Minneapolis - two people pointed out the transportation problem that will occur late at night. And in the world of sustainability which is a long word for interconnectedness - it came to me, was there an interconnected discussion about this bar time closing issue? Because my "bus" riding friends tell me that MTC has cancelled all of it's late night and all night bus routes with the budget cuts.
Last week at Planning Commission we approved Holy Land Bakery & Deli on Central Ave. as a 24/7 place. Oh joy - of rapture! Somewhere to go to eat very late at night or in the early morning. The beginning of a cosmopolitan city along with extended bar times. Whoppee te do!
But the only way to do all that is drive a car because our transportation system isn't setup to handle getting everyone to and from or home in the middle of the night. What kind of long range planning is that?
I really want a cosmopolitan city but we must put together all the pieces for it to work.
Late night party girl...
