The whole notion of bikes on Lake flies in the face of common sense. Time was when bikeriders wanted bike paths to AVOID mixing in traffic. That was a clearer-headed set of priorities. Moreover, if you set up Lake so it is a headache to drive, why are you expecting anyone with business to gravitate to it? I think people are neglecting to make sure that all the positions they are taking combine in some logical way. There are undoubtedly bike fans who are fantasizing cars going away, but then if that's the case, CLOSE 35W. We know, of course, that POLITICALLY is a nonstarter. So, lets assume a higher density of cars and ask AGAIN how it makes sense to mix in bikes. I don't think it does. If you have a problem with the Greenway, solve that problem. Don't spend whatever millions are spent on it and then spend MORE millions so that Lake Street can rob some of its traffic.
I ride a bike. I ride it a lot. I NEVER ride it on Lake except to get from one place where I can use an alternate street to another place where I can. Lake is just a very bad biking street. And it will be unacceptably expensive to make it otherwise. I just don't get people who want so badly to bread automotive exhaust that they insist on riding on a busy street like that. When I'm on my bike, I like peace and fresh air. That's why I use 31st street, 28th street, Mississippi Blvd, and Summit Avenue. I hate Marshall and Grand Ave, just like I hate Minnehaha Ave and Lake Street. They are bike unfriendly because they channel most of the city traffic. Come on people, money isn't endless (as we who pay it are too aware). Let's FOCUS and try to spend what we do spend rationally, OK? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> You know, there are LEGITIMATE arguments that can be made about MPD and the makings of a good chief. But let's not let ONE myth establish itself: You can be RESPECTED as chief and still have trouble with the Police Federation. The Federation doesn't reflect in its PR the true relationship of the chief with the rank and file. The head of it is involved in politics, and he tends to make everything political. The chief has to discipline and direct. The Federation makes hay out of that. It is adversarial with the taxpayers AND with the police administration. The right to organize cannot be denied the rank and file, but it has its downsides. If the chief is disrespected, look for other evidence. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ===== Jim Mork Cooper Neighborhood Longfellow Community Minneapolis A great town, which can and WILL BE greater! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
