Most of the problem with the Greenway is that it's pretty inaccessible. It's great if I want to get from somewhere east to Lake Calhoun or vice versa, but for neighborhood transportation it just doesn't work.

I doubt it would cost millions to incorporate bike lanes into the Lake Street design, but as Jim points out, the problem still stands: Lake Street is a really bad place for a bike. (Unless the bike is going only a little slower or faster than the speed of traffic. Then it's alright, if you're observant.)

How about another suggestion: Install a bike lane in each direction on 31st street. This would certainly work west of 35W. Would this be possible east of 35W? This could divert a lot of the neighborhood bike travel from Lake Street and is a much more convenient (and less costly) solution than anything that could be done to the Greenway.

Don't get me wrong; I like the Greenway. It's just better suited for a certain type of longer-distance transportation than on-street biking. Also, this setup wouldn't keep all bikes off Lake Street (nor should it) but it would provide a convenient and much safer alternative.

Another wish: Bike lanes on 26th and 28th Sts. a la Park and the other north-south one-way the name of which I forget. One way streets tend to be a lot better for bikes than two way. I know this duplicates some of the functionality of the Greenway, but the cost of putting down a bike lane on streets such as these can't be much more than the cost of paint.

Just a couple suggestions.

I don't think it does. If
you have a problem with the Greenway, solve that

I ride a bike. I ride it a lot. I NEVER ride it
on Lake except to get from one place where I can
use an alternate street to another place where I
can. Lake is just a very bad biking street. And
it will be unacceptably expensive to make it
otherwise.

TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. Don't feed the troll! Ignore obvious flame-bait. 2. If you don't like what's being discussed here, don't complain - change the subject (Mpls-specific, of course.)
