First, I'd like to think our reporters are good enough to find good stories
without it necessarily being a discredit to other outlets.

Second, I think the Strib might have passed on this because when we reported
on it, the council committee had sent Schiff's action back to him for
tweaking. Any approval was (as we have since seen) a month-plus down the
road.

The Strib's a great big place - and I love beating them to a story - but
they cover a lot of stuff every day that we don't have to. It was my news
judgment that we go with this story earlier, because it was interesting
enough. It was probably theirs that they could wait until the proposal was
in its final form before they had to let the world know.

I've spent my entire career in "non-corporate" media, so I've lived a life
of filling in their blanks and I'm not inclined to cut them slack. But in
this case, us jumping on this story early doesn't mean they're coming to the
story late.
