Perhaps Mr. Anderson should stop at the downtown
library (Central Library Marquette) and see what
services are available. Here are a few examples of
what he could find in just one area of the library,
Technology, Science and Government Documents:

He could research the history of an important bill in
Congress on paper or through databases

He could examine voting records of his Senators and
Representatives on databases

He could find a Minneapolis ordinance or state
statute, on paper or online

He could look at every patent issued in America, since
1790, online and on DVD

He could research economic indicators and global trade
leads via a database

He could find demographic information about his
neighborhood, census tract, city, etc., as well as
data from every census, on paper and online

He could fix his car by consulting a shop manual, just
like mechanics use

He could research a medical condition or disease, on
paper or via a database

He could find a great recipe in a cookbook

These are just some examples of what may be found in
one subject area of the library. Consider that there
are many more subject areas as well, and many trained
professionals and para-professionals prepared to help
your research. A great city needs a great library for
this kind of service; it's far more than just
providing books.
