Well, now that it's brought up... I spent a LOT of my time growing up at the Hollywood Theater. I worked there (unpaid) for many years for the Cutters, the last family to successfully run the theater. Must have been the free labor. Well, if you count the free popcorn, pop, candy, and movies, I guess it wasn't free.
The lot on 28th and Johnson was a gas station. Where the parking lot for the theater was is where the convenience store is across the street - started out as a Lil' General store and I don't recall what it is now. I do believe that's one reason the theater had a difficult time, no parking lot. One of my first duties was to stand in the parking lot across the street in the middle of the block and tell people going to the theater that they may not park there. It was at that time a lot for the Super Value grocery store. Bruce Anderson Blaine - formerly of Waite Park and Camden Mark Snyder said... Actually, I believe the vacant lot in question is the corner lot on 28th and Johnson St. If I'm remembering correctly, that wasn't ever a parking lot, but used to be a service station many years back and had some soil contamination issues. It's been sitting as a grassy plot for quite a few years, kind of like a miniature version of that spot on Penn/Lowry. I've not heard of any plans to mess with the parking lot that's located in the middle of the block. It's probably a little large for what's in the node now, but it does get used by shoppers at the various little shops on both sides of 29th and Johnson. I'm guessing it will probably work out to be just about the right size to accommodate the additional traffic from a restored Hollywood Theatre. Mark Snyder Windom Park TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1.
