I love my elm, it's huge and shades the entire west half of my house and I can't even imagine losing it. MY AC bill is half the price it would be without it. We are on a three-year treatment schedule (just treated last year) and are crossing our fingers with the latest run of Dutch elm. Are there any knowledgeable horticulture types who know if an elm can be treated this summer to defend against Dutch elm disease?
I also remember reading a couple years back about resistant new elm trees
that are quite popular in many parts of the country for those who may be
planting trees this year.
We love our huge elm, too, as well as the not so large one on the boulevard belonging to the city. They are on the southwestern corner of our house and like Scott, we benefit greatly from their shade in the summer. We likewise have them on a 3-year treatment schedule and they are due next year. If there is anything that can be done this year with the resurgence of Dutch elm disease, I'd like to know also.
Scott: according to the Star Tribune's FixIt column in the past Sunday paper, there is a hybrid elm tree called the Accolade elm which is resistant to Dutch elm. Of course, they do take many years to grow from seed to stately beauty. The article is online here: http://www.startribune.com/stories/389/3979355.html
That reminds me -- we actually have a 3rd elm in our backyard. It's a ten-foot spindly thing that grew from one of the million seeds that fell and came up through the junipers and other bushes. I'd like to move it, but I don't think it's possible because its roots are in a terrace / walled embankment.
Shade from the many trees is one of Minneapolis' biggest advantages as a city, in my point of view.
