In response to Bill Cullen's question about what is the problem with
hundreds of people being evicted from their homes because their rents
tripled, I would ask Mr. Cullen to imagine himself a minimum wage earner,
working in the service industry (in a restaurant, in a small store, etc.),
living in the same apartment for many years, making an important
contribution to the quality of life in this city, and, then, suddenly, being
thrown out into the street, along with the neighbors you've known over the
years, because the new owner of the apartment building decided to triple the
rents.

The question is, "Is it proper for municipal government to intervene in such
an instance and protect that class of tenants?"

Keith Reitman correctly sees the problem with government intervention is
that it creates more government, which creates more bureaucrats, which can
be subject to political patronage. I am surprised, however, that Mr.
Reitman thinks I would ever be eligible for a patronage position having
burned all possible political bridges years ago.
