Jim Mork says, in part:WM: I think there would be more bang for the buck if neighborhoods around each community library were to put money into a pot to keep their neighborhood library open more hours. For example, if your nearest library has been reduced to 24 hrs. from 40 hrs., it could take $60,000 to bring it's hours back up to 40 (from all those living within a 1.5 mi. radius of a particular branch). If you lost your homework helper, it will cost you for 15 hours/week of salary and benefits to keep that person working.
Just out of curiosity, I got out my list of proposed taxes for this year that came from the county. As I suspected, for my midrange house, the total tax for the LIBRARY BOARD was $46.46. Shoot! At that level, I could raise it 50% without breaking a sweat.
[MH] I don't believe the library referendum has even kicked in yet; but don't worry, I'm confident their amount will more than double within the next few years. It will be phased in over several years and remain for many thereafter; all while service levels are reduced.
I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet. But in order to get money allocated to libraries, it will be necessary for lots of folks, state wide, to pester the legislature, cajole them into a more proactive stance, generally make it clear to them that the losses libraries throughout the state are experiencing are counter-productive to reaching the state goals for the schools, the workforce, and everyone else. During this 21st. century, we are becoming much more an imperial power with access to all the globe. That means that information will be what American do, for the most part. Bean counters to the world! Imperial powers always need more scribes and clerks of one sort or another.
