I think you may be coloring the progressives and social justice people
wrongly.
Many of the persons I know and consider progressive and socially conscious
are in no way wanting more roads.  I think the "progressives" you speak of
work in St Paul and come from all over the state.

I may be off my rocker with this, but I find it hard to believe that
"increased expenditures on auto-based infrastructure" can be used in the
same sentence with "social justice"

We desperately need to put more efforts into public mass transit if we want
to keep this area as a great place to live.  The north star line is a better
idea than the LRT line, but both are going to be wonderful things in the
future.  Now maybe we could build one between the two downtowns and thru the
campuses.  Imagine the potential ridership of that line.
