Someone yesterday identified a phrase "acting white" This is a common response, and it's called the "Crab Theory" in other circles
It seems that if you have an open basket or bucket full of crabs trompsing on each other and piled up on the bottom you don't need to put a lid on the bucket. If the crabs on the bottom see that one bigger/stronger/brighter crab has almost made it to the top, they'll reach up to snag a free ride out of there and the weight of the grabbers-on will pull the crab back to the bottom. In Deaf Culture (don't ask), about the worst thing you can say of someone is that they are "Just hearing." The return volley will mention "crab theory."
