Some of the list members have recently been condemning Peter McClaughlin's association with Basim Sabri.  First off, there were 2 other City Councilmembers who were a part of the Grand Opening celebration at Lake Plaza (Sabri's building), however neither of their names have been mentioned.  This gives me an indication that the posts are strictly a personal attack on Mr. McClaughlin. This also reemphasizes my strong belief that Mr. McClaughlin's heart is in the right place.  He cares about the economic development of south Minneapolis by supporting a revitalized area of east Lake St. and, most importantly, the opportunities that have been given to the immigrants who, for the most part, make up business on Lake St. (Latino and Somalis)

It is not whether or not Peter McClaughlin likes Basim Sabri or not, it is about him supporting a developer who has successfully changed a neglected, downridden, drug dealing, prostitution filled area of east Lake St. into a booming economic area that is now, inviting for other investors and visitors.

With regards to Peter McClaughlin's support of the 35W project, I think it is ludicrous for people to criticize him for wanting to accommodate Wells Fargo and Abbott Northwestern. Folks, the old Honeywell would be standing vacant today, as the Sears building is, if it wasn't in part for the help of Peter McClaughlin.  The now standing Wells Fargo is on the tax roll and has provided south Minneapolis and the state of MN with over 2500 jobs.  Should we call Peter McClaughlin a criminal for helping to make that happen?

I am proud to have people such as Basim Sabri and Peter McClaughlin in my area who have made it possible to have a safer and more economically viable neighborhood.
