A 49 year old man, gentle in every way, lies in a coma at HCMC on life support.  He was brutally beaten early Saturday morning in front of his apartment building at 512 Cedar Avenue on the West Bank.  The pool of his blood has dried, but it still covers the sidewalk where several thugs kicked his head against the building.

I own the building, and the gentleman works for me.

As Listmembers argue about picking pockets for more tax revenue, keep in mind that the primary purpose of our government is to protect us -- from criminals, both foreign and domestic.  It is NOT to fund our favorite form of recreation and pay the bills that we prefer not to.

We must pay attention to the SPENDING side of the budget equation and insist that our money be used to PROTECT EVERYONE.  Only a small amount (8%) of the City's budget is spent for Police.  What a disgrace.

A more meaningful debate would identify how public money SHOULD be spent.   All the theaters in the world, all the parks in the world, all the office buildings in the world, all of the skating rinks in the world are worthless if people are afraid to leave their homes, and businesses refuse to accept the crime risk.

What is the purpose of City government anyway?
