I recall from reading the article that someone stated they could collect $200 a day on the streets asking for money. I suspect that a hard luck story might increase collections, but I can't find the article online to see if that comment was made.
$200 per day isn't bad. It certainly would put someone above the metropolitan median income and disqualify them from many housing subsidies. Work 5 days a week, take a few holidays off and a short vacation and pull down $50,000 a year. Presumably its tax free. Presumably because if its gifts they generally aren't taxable. I suspect if you list your occupation as "panhandler" on your tax return it would be income from a trade of business and subject to the usual taxes, but hey, its still not a bad paying gig. They there's the overhead that covers the administrative costs of most charity giving. The fundraising costs here are almost nil, same with administration. Should get a good rating from the Charities Review Council.
