Two years ago I recieved a notice from the inspections dept that I had 30 days to repair/replace damaged siding/trim on my garage. The garage was sided in masonite, so it essentially all had to be replaced - but 30 days? I was lucky - I was able to figure out how to do it myself - but what if I needed to find a contractor? Can you imagine getting a bid finalized in 30 days let alone the work done? This was in late May, by the way, so most contractors were pretty booked up through August by that time... The housing inspector returned 1 day after the 30 day period and was seen by my neighbors circling the garage. Ironically because I pulled a permit for the work I also had to call the permit inspectors to come out and inspect it as well because of course it's two different groups with different guidelines, apparently.
At our previous house, also in SW Mpls, a bathroom remodel led to a warning about an unprotected second story door that opened from a bedroom onto a flat roof. I barricaded it - but after the first deadline had expired, but before the "do it or else" date which came in the second letter (they came, they saw, they warned). However, the second time they didn't bother to tell me they didn't like the way I barricaded it, they just sent me a summons to housing court and put a warrant out for my arrest!. The inspector was worried that a guest might think the door was an exit during a fire and try to get out that way.
I hope they don't find out how dirty my garbage cans are on the inside.
