The city came thru my alley last year and cited many garages for pealing paint. What struck me funny was the letter we all received directed us to paint the alley side of the garage, but nothing about the rest of the garage. Even funnier, was the garage opposite mine has trim rotting away and siding falling off, their letter only required painting the alley side of the garage. Several years ago when I was in the process of painting and redoing the soffits/facia on my garage I received a rather pointed letter about the lack of an address on my garage. I called them on it and didn't get the impression that they cared that I was in the process of renovations, just that if I didn't get an address on my garage I would have to face the consequences. I have a condo now, so no problems that way, but my next house I will just wait for the letters and just do what I'm told. Its cheaper to just paint one side and stick a few numbers on a garage that redo soffits/facia and paint the whole darned thing. I sometimes think our cities autocracies are clueless about how the real world functions. Ron Leurquin Nokomis East

I got one too; mine was a cutesie letter from some pseudo-neighborhood clean-up organization stating that if I don't paint the trim on my garage in two weeks I can expect a violation notice from the city. I called and told them I felt there were more important things going on in North Minneapolis than chipping paint, and that they can come and pry the paintbrush out of my cold, dead hands. I mentioned I didn't like that the rather threatening tone of the letter either - apparently the city has kept enough employees to be able to send someone out to "do it for me" for an exorbinant amount of money. Does anyone know if they let you look at a color chart? Or do they use street-stripe yellow on everybody's? I also told them my neighbor's garage has been physically crumbling for years and that I hope they got a nice letter too. I twisted the knife by reminding them that there's a vacant house owned by the city on the corner of 34th & Russell that's been sitting for nearly SIX YEARS. He assured me by saying they sent out 250 notices... Jerks, Jill Harmon Cleveland TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. Don't feed the troll! Ignore obvious flame-bait. 2.
