For those readers living in more affluent neighborhoods where a renter is much more likely to report unsafe living conditions, be aware that it doesn't happen with the same frequency in the economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
WM: One of the reasons people don't report unsafe conditions is that they are afraid that if they do their landlord will evict them.
I know that when I bought my house it had some problems--60 years of delayed maintenance. Bit by bit I'm getting it back in order. Right now I'm worried about a pillar in front which is clearly sagging and which will wreck the house if left unattended. Some of the bids I got for the work were staggering. Sofits, facia, drainpipes, pillar = $21,000.00 Holy schamoley. That's unattainable for low income folks, which many of my neighbors and I are. Things was, the house was bought for very little money--60 years of deferred maintenance. I could have bought a brand new double wide for less, with fireplace and skylight, but I'd have to live somewhere close to outter east Boondocks. Not a good ecological niche for me.
Dyna,
Try Paint-a-thon. They'll do your whole house if you provide the paint. Trez wonderful.
