Dyna - the whole "countryside 'grows' while the city is dying thing" (apparently a series; which small town is next for Minneapolis-list glory?) is interesting but incomplete.
One reason stuff is so cheap in the countryside is that it is dying, too; jobs are leaving (or have left), kids grow up and out (usually because there's nothing to do, and no jobs) that's why prices are so cheap (and no one cares about peeling paint.) There ARE places that are booming - some call them suburbs. They REALLY care about peeling paint (I know, I have friends who are inspectors there) and they're not as cheap as Hawthorne or Starbuck. Remember, prices are low when demand is low. Notwithstanding the countryside's virtues, of which there are many, they don't have perennial task forces about rescuing rural Minnesota because it's a good economic model to compete with. If you don't like what's being discussed here, don't complain - change the subject (Mpls-specific, of course.) ________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A City-focused Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Un-subscribe, etc. at: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
