I have not seen vending machines in Whittier School
itself. However, the school is adjoined to the
Whittier Park Building and there are vending machines
in the park building. I have actually noticed that
the park machines do have a good selection of healthy
choices for kids. I am not saying the kids make those
healthy choices, I am just saying there are healthy
items available. Not sure about the beverage thing
though. I think there is a juice machine and a pop
machine that also has bottled water as a choice.

Funny you should bring this issue up Peter. My husband
and I were talking to my son over dinner tonight about
how we used to raise money for the school. We
explained what "paper sales" were. I remember when I
went to Hale School a million years ago that we had
paper sales to raise money. I am not sure how exactly
that all worked. Maybe Steve Brandt can enlighten on
this one. At any rate, I explained that "back in the
day" we were lucky if we saw one Disney movie a year.
That was a big deal. If we did well with the paper
sale, the principal always showed us a Disney movie.
