Arrested vs. Suspected.
Heck if a guy had TEN indictments, I'd wonder about the court system. But arrests? Heck, people are arrested to serve as material witnesses. It strikes me as a nearly MEANINGLESS statistic. But it is the kind of thing that makes casual readers excited. That's why we need more cautious thinking in the whole area of law enforcement. Me, I don't want to ever be on the wrong end of this impetuous thinking!

First Ave
My question: Why was it not possible to post signs like they do with road work giving a date for the change? I could see them pretty much all the way south to wherever First Ave switches to two-way (or used to). I hope the streets department gets wind of this input and applies what is USUALLY their policy to situations like this. It is OK to experiment to help the neighborhood, but COMMUNICATE. We're talking about lives and property here. A casual attitude is not needed.

School Funding
"Pawlenty cuts hit education, social services
BY JIM RAGSDALE
Pioneer Press
Gov. Tim Pawlenty took the rare step today of slashing state spending to balance the budget, cutting nearly $282 million by targeting K-12 education, funding for ethanol production, human services, higher education and other programs and services throughout the state.

"These are difficult choices to make,'' Pawlenty said in announcing his decision to use his power to unilaterally cut expenditures to balance the current two-year budget. This power, known as "unallotment,'' is rarely used, and lifts the decision out of the hands of the Minnesota Legislature."

What I guess we're really LOOKING for is what the per-pupil funds were the last three years. If the MPS can show there is a reduction of funds appropriate PER-PUPIL, then I'm sure they have a beef. And if Pawlenty (as shown above) was INCLINED to turn the spigot down, he has to take the heat. If enrollment declined at the same speed that funds declined, then its just a matter of making corresponding cuts in costs.

Access Project
Mark Anderson is only part right. Sure, idling cars do no good to the air quality. But the creation of more free-flowing traffic often just gets people driving more, which can reduce or even reverse any good done. It really isn't a certain thing whether these projects help or hurt.
