Landlords & Ordinances
When you see "what do you mean we" rather than a comment on the substance of the issue, you know that somebody is trying to make their involvement the issue.
WM: Wrong, so wrong. The city had no issue with the prostitution saunas. There was one that existed directly across the street from the 3rd precinct for years without problem. It was the WOMEN who live near Lake St. who made an issue of the saunas. The city council had to be goaded into dealing with it and would have done zip had not Kathy Thurber kept on them to do something. The police hate trying to bring down saunas since it requires a lot of effort and is mostly met with disappointment.
Even last Thursday members of the body politic were regretting the loss of the sauna and making a point of letting us know that they objected. One member of my neighborhood group, a male, actually got up at a public meeting to oppose closing the saunas because "I have needs," he stated.
Too bad. The FACT is that Minneapolis, the POLITY, has taken the position that NOT ALL BUSINESSES ARE DESIRED. Moreover, not all saunas are located within Philips or districts west. Longfellow closed three of them, too. And I have to doubt that our Philips warriors were the reason. In fact, in my discussions of it with residents in my area, I was TOLD that it was neighbors who caused them to be closed.
WM: Yes, it was women who live within a couple of blocks of Lake Street from I35 East who wanted the saunas removed. Even painted a van with anti-prostitution slogans and planted it outside the saunas. Very damn few men supported the effort and most of them were the husbands and fathers of women who rallied to get the prostitution saunas out..
