We had a serious problem in the north tip community on Nicollet Island when the old bridge over the railroad tracks at Nicollet Street became unusable for vehicular traffic. This meant that everyone had to wait interminably at the two grade crossings at East and West Island Avenues. Trains would just sit there for upwards of 30 minutes as I recall. The tracks that cross Nicollet Island were a major feed into the downtown marshalling yards. With a number of elderly and infirm residents in the old wood frame houses this was truly unacceptable and the railroad was eventually forced by a court order and a fine to rebuild the bridge.
