ARCHITECTS SHAPE THE NEW MINNEAPOLIS
The Weisman Art Museum presents A Conversation with Cesar Pelli, Architect
for the Minneapolis Central Library

Host: Thomas Fisher, dean of the University of Minnesota College of
Architecture and Landscape Architecture

The Minneapolis cityscape is changing. Hear about pivotal local architecture
projects from leading architects, critics, and analysts in the year-long
program series, "Architects Shape the New Minneapolis." Series participants
discuss the impact of bold architectural initiatives-fueled by the vision of
local cultural organizations-that are shaping our communities, our economy,
and our daily lives. Cesar Pelli opens the series on Sunday, September 21,
at 2:00 p.m. at the Historic Pantages Theater, 710 Hennepin, Minneapolis.

Pelli is the architect for the new Minneapolis Central Library, opening in
2006. Pelli's new library design features glass facades and a dramatic,
wing-like roof over a five-story atrium. It will be a dynamic,
resource-rich, downtown destination for the community.

Thomas Fisher writes extensively as an architecture critic. His current
scholarship focuses on architectural ethics and sustainable practices.

"Architects Shape the New Minneapolis" is organized by the Weisman Art
Museum with partners: The Children's Theatre Company, Guthrie Theater,
Minneapolis Public Library, Walker Art Center, and the American Institute of
Architects-Minnesota; sponsored by Target Stores with support from the
Target Foundation. Additional support provided by the American Express
Minnesota Philanthropic Program.

The series also features Frank Gehry, architect for the Frederick R. Weisman
Art Museum (November 2), "The Artistic Dividend: The Hidden Contributions of
Architecture and the Arts to the Regional Economy" presented by Ann
Markusen, professor and director of the U of M Humphrey Institute Project on
Regional and Industrial Economies (November 19), and coming in Spring 2004:
architects Jean Nouvel, Jacques Herzog, and Michael Graves, and a roundtable
discussion with Twin Cities architects.

Tickets are required for all events and may be purchased in advance or at
the door ($15 general/$10 members of sponsoring organizations). More
