Report: City housing policies create 'lethal agenda'
by Brandt Williams, Minnesota Public Radio
September 19, 2003

new report by an advocacy group blames poor planning
and housing policies for violent crime in Minneapolis. "Lethal Agenda, the Politics of
Death
in Urban America," concludes that Minneapolis city
leaders are endangering the safety of residents,
because they have ignored proven strategies to
revitalize inner city neighborhoods. Minneapolis
leaders say the process of improving these
neighborhoods is more complex than the report
suggests.

Or is it really Dumb Growth?
Noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26
We've heard the term "smart growth," but just how
smart is it? Steve Belmont, author of "Cities in Full,"
will look into that question at the CURA Housing Forum,
a monthly discussion of housing research and issues in
the Twin Cities sponsored by the University of
Minnesota's Center for Urban and Regional Affairs
(CURA). Belmont, who is also founder of the Great
Cities Alliance, will speak in the Carlson School
of Management's Honeywell Auditorium (Room 2-213).
His lecture is called "A Lethal Agenda Called Smart
Growth." For more information, call Melissa Metzler
at CURA, (612) 625-2578. News Service contact,
Paul Moore, (612) 624-0214
