Last I heard, freezing temperatures are forecast for this week.  Maybe even tonight.  And so be sure to pick your green tomatoes off the vine before the first frost.  If you don’t, they’ll rot very quickly, even after temps only slightly below freezing.

And there are plenty of things you can do with your green tomatoes:

1. Donate them to the GreenSpace Partners Green Tomato Cook-Off 2003.  This is our biggest source for tomatoes for the cook-off.  If you have a large quantity to donate, I will come to pick them up.  I may even be able to come and pick them off the vines tonight.  Details about the cook-off are available at http://www.greeninstitute.org/GSP.

2. Pull the vines and hang them upside down in your house, preferably in a sunny room.  The tomatoes will continue to ripen on the vine for months.

3. If you don't have room to hang the vines, pick the tomatoes and store them in single layers between layers of newspaper.  Be sure to check every 2-3 days, removing any rotten tomatoes.  If you don't, you might have an ugly mess on your hands.

4. Whether you keep your tomatoes or donate them, do please come to the Green Tomato cook-off on October 16.  And please feel free to contact me with any questions.
