Chris Johnson pointed out: It looks like some measurements are getting mixed here to me. The median income number used is for Hennepin County, but the home prices are for Minneapolis. I think we are interested in housing in Minneapolis, mostly. I would guess, but do not know, that the median income in Minneapolis proper is a lot lower than the $51,711 for Hennepin County.
Bill Cullen responds: The US census number is actually the lower of the two "official" numbers I am aware of. HUD reports that the median income for MPLS/St. Paul is $75,300 (1). According to my friends in St. Paul PED, they use the $75K number to calculate appropriate affordable housing segments. Do families in St. Paul make a lot more than families in Mpls? I don't think so. Maybe someone at MCDA would post what numbers they use? Regardless of what the median income is in MPLS, I still believe there are housing opportunities provided by the marketplace (without government intervention) for families above $25K annual income.
