I'm wondering if anyone could provide some information about the huge rigs that have been drilling at several locations (26th and Howard, 23rd and Washington, parking lot of St. Clements church at Lowry and Jackson) in the Holland neighborhood in northeast Minneapolis over the last few weeks. From what I have heard, they are tracking spreading underground industrial contamination coming out of the nearby Shoreham rail yards. Rumors are that there is an underground aquifer slowly carrying this contamination out of the yard. First it went east of Central Avenue and it has now flowed back to the west of Central--and is probably heading towards the Mississippi River, I would imagine. I know that the Star Tribune mentioned something about this (listing Shoreham as one of the ten worst contamination sites in the State of Minnesota) awhile back, but the Northeaster has been strangely quiet about this issue. I missed a public information meeting held in August but now many neighborhood residents are wondering what is going on.
I have heard that there is a lawsuit between CP and an oil company (which may be a suspect in petro-chemical pollution on the site?) and that, because of this litigation, little information is available. I know there was also creosote operations by the yard in the past. Other than a few people who are involved in the SAAC (Shoreham Advisory Committee) it seems like nobody really knows what is going on. But when large drilling rigs start to appear all over the neighborhood, it seems like time for various parties, including the city, to be more forthcoming. Anyone know who exactly at the city and state level is responsible for this? Bruce Shoemaker Holland Neighborhood REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
