Susan Maricle Writes:

According to the Jordan article in Sundays Strib, it sounds like even our Dennis Plante is having second
thoughts.

Dennis Plante Responds:

Yes, in fact the article was accurate. All of the very distinct factions at work in neighborhoods such as Jordan have, in my opinion, an agenda which is not conducive (or inclusive) of the issues that must be resolved to make neighborhoods (like Jordan) livable for ALL of its inhabitants.

As long as we as both a city and a society deem it appropriate to allow minorities to be contained in very specific geographic areas, the current problems and issues will continue. In all honesty, I care very little about issues that don't directly impact me. Conversly, I can also understand how the white majority living in the 'burbs care very little about the plight of inner-city minorities. It doesn't directly affect them... It becomes much easier for me to reach a level of affluence and move away from these issues (to the 'burbs), than it does to continue to attempt to change them.

Everything is tied together. If we want to end police brutality (real or perceived), if we want to afford innr-city (mostly minority) children the same educational opportunity, if we want to end institutional racism, then we need to STOP allowing/forcing minorities to live packed into specific geographic areas.

Many whites in the 'burbs have learned to view minority cultures differently (it doesn't always go smoothly) when they find their new next door neighbor is in fact "not like them". Bonds are made, caring begins...
