Having observed the Minneapolis City Council since 1988, I, among others have noticed a change since the remodeling of the council chambers. In the former configuration (horseshoe), council members for the most part faced or observed each other during debate. In the new configuration (linear), observation of your colleagues is obscured. The current seating arrangement panders to the lights, caffeine and the omnipresent camera. Not facing your policy adversary results in a series of boorish and long-winded outbursts that are divisive and disrespectful. I hope given the number of policy decisions that currently face the city, our city council can put personalities aside and debate policy.
